Electric and hybrid vehicles in Cyprus have gained a stronger foothold in the market during the first five months of 2025, according to official data released on Tuesday by the state statistical service.
Despite a 4 per cent decrease in overall vehicle registrations from January to May 2025 compared to the same period in 2024, the market share of electric and hybrid saloon cars experienced a fair mount of growth.
Total vehicle registrations from January to May 2025 reached 21,012, compared to 21,881 in the same period of 2024.
Saloon passenger car registrations declined by 5.5 per cent, totalling 16,224 vehicles, down from 17,176 in the first five months of 2024.
Out of these, 6,874 or 42.4 per cent were new vehicles, while 9,350 or 57.6 per cent were used.
Rental saloon vehicles saw a notable increase of 18.1 per cent, reaching 2,197 units.
The market share of petrol-powered saloon cars fell to 43.7 per cent in 2025, down from 49.3 per cent in the same period of 2024.
Diesel-powered cars also saw a decline in market share, dropping from 10 per cent in 2024 to 8.8 per cent in 2025.
In contrast, electric vehicles saw their share rise to 4.7 per cent in 2025, compared to 3.4 per cent the previous year.
Hybrid vehicles continued their upward trend, increasing their market share from 37.3 per cent in 2024 to 42.9 per cent in 2025.
Bus registrations decreased to 63 in the January to May 2025 period, down from 83 in the same period last year.
Registrations of goods transport vehicles slightly increased by 0.1 per cent, reaching 2,474 compared to 2,471 in the first five months of 2024.
Specifically, light lorries increased by 3.4 per cent to 2,021, and road tractors (trailers) rose by 3.3 per cent to 95.
However, heavy lorries declined by 6.9 per cent to 271 units, and rental vehicles in this category fell by 34.6 per cent to 87.
Moped registrations under 50cc dropped sharply to 101, compared to 381 in the same period of 2024.
On the other hand, motorcycles over 50cc rose significantly by 26 per cent, reaching 1,864 from 1,479.
In May 2025 alone, total motor vehicle registrations increased by 13.7 per cent, reaching 4,879 compared to 4,292 in May 2024.
Saloon passenger car registrations in May 2025 grew by 11.7 per cent, rising to 3,715 from 3,325 in the same month of 2024.
