Pafos FC will make their debut in the Champions League, Europe’s premier football competition, against defending Israeli champions Maccabi Tel Aviv.
The Cypriot champions, who won their first ever league title last season, will enter the Champions League at the second qualifying round stage, and will thus need to make it past three opponents in two-legged ties if they are to qualify for the league phase and be pitted against Europe’s elite sides.
They will host Maccabi Tel Aviv, likely in Limassol, on July 22 or July 23, with the tie’s second leg set to take place the following week. No arrangements have yet been made for that second leg, though it is possible that given the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, the match may be moved to a different venue.
Meanwhile, Cypriot cup winners Aek Larnaca will enter the Europa League, Europe’s second-tier competition, at the first qualifying round stage. They will face Serbian side Partizan at home on July 10, before travelling away to Belgrade for the second leg on July 17.
Two Cypriot sides, Aris Limassol and Omonia, qualified for the Conference League, Europe’s third-tier competition. They will both enter the competition at the second qualifying round stage.
Aris Limassol have been drawn to play Hungary’s Puskas Akademia, while Omonia will face the winners of the first-round tie between Georgian outfit Torpedo Kutaisi and Kazakh side Ordabasy.
Both Cypriot sides will play the first leg at home, with first leg ties set to take place on July 24, and second leg ties set to take place on July 31.
Last season, all four Cypriot sides ended their European campaigns in the Conference League, with Pafos FC making it the furthest, being knocked out by Swedish side Djurgardens in the last 16.
Djurgardens went on to reach the semi-finals, being knocked out by eventual winners Chelsea.
Two other Cypriot sides had been knocked out at the knockout phase playoff stage, one round earlier than Pafos FC, with Apoel being knocked out by Slovenian outfit Celje, and Omonia losing the first ever all-Cypriot European tie 3-2 on aggregate to Pafos FC.
Aek Larnaca had been knocked out of the competition at the second qualifying round stage the previous summer, being beaten 5-0 on aggregate by Hungarian side Paks.
