A new Erasmus+ initiative, the EMPOWER project (Empowering Teachers for Science Learning through Modelling-Based Approaches), aims to transform the teaching and learning of Science Education across Europe by equipping teachers with innovative tools and strategies grounded in modelling-based learning approaches.

This paedagogical approach, whose effectiveness has been well documented since the early 2000s, actively engages students in authentic scientific practices by emphasising the construction, use and evaluation of representations of natural phenomena (models). In doing so, it contributes significantly to the development of scientific literacy and deeper conceptual understanding.

The EMPOWER project brings together leading researchers and educators from Germany, Cyprus, the Netherlands and Spain with the goal of developing a robust, research-informed framework for integrating modelling-based approaches into science teaching.

Through collaborative processes and close cooperation with practicing teachers across participating countries, the project will develop modular professional development programmes, digital resources, and teaching materials that promote inclusive and inquiry-based learning environments.

Key components of EMPOWER

  • Development of a scientifically grounded framework for modelling-based learning, taking into account teachers’ local needs, national curricula and relevant educational research.
  • Creation of online asynchronous professional development modules and instructional materials in Greek, English, German, Dutch and Spanish, supporting teachers in integrating modelling-based approaches into Science education.
  • Year-long collaboration with teachers from participating countries for the co-design, pilot implementation and refinement of teaching units that can be readily adopted by educators across Europe.
  • Dissemination of knowledge, teaching strategies and best practices related to modelling-based learning through webinars, conferences and dissemination events, including three Modelling Festivals in Cyprus, the Netherlands and Spain, as well as a final international conference in Cyprus in 2028.
  • Strong emphasis on teachers’ professional development, aiming to enhance confidence and competence in implementing modelling-based instructional approaches.

EMPOWER aims to:

  • Strengthen teachers’ professional competence in modelling-based approaches, enhancing confidence in Science teaching
  • Improve student engagement and conceptual understanding through inquiry-based learning practices
  • Promote innovation in Science education by integrating authentic scientific practices into classroom teaching
  • Support inclusivity and multilingual accessibility by ensuring the availability of educational resources across diverse European educational contexts

By supporting teachers’ professional development, EMPOWER contributes to the long-term improvement of Science education quality and to enhanced student learning outcomes across Europe.

Participation in Cyprus

In Cyprus, the project is implemented by:

  • European University Cyprus, through the Centre of Excellence for Research & Innovation in Social Sciences, Arts and Humanities (SOSCIEATH), coordinated by Professor Loukas Louca (contact email: [email protected] ), and
  • University of Cyprus, coordinated by Dr Marios Papaevripidou (contact email: [email protected] ).
