Following the Limassol Grand Parade, City Friends Club led a large-scale post-carnival cleanup along Arch. Makariou III Avenue, mobilising hundreds of volunteers to help make the celebration more eco-responsible.
Working together with municipal services, a team of over 500 City Friends Club volunteers focused on collecting specific types of recyclable waste during the cleanup. These included PMD (plastics, metals, and drink cartons) and sprays, which were sorted before municipal services fully cleared the streets for reopening.
Compared to last year, when 50 volunteers joined the initiative, the movement has grown tenfold, showing the increasing engagement of the community.
While municipal services removed 50 tonnes of waste in total, volunteers collected an additional 8,5 tonnes of recyclable materials, including 7 tonnes of sprays, in just 3 hours.
The sorted waste was transported to state-licensed organisations, ensuring it was sent to recycling facilities abroad instead of local landfills.
“This year’s cleanup demonstrates the real impact volunteers can make,” said Anna Gubareva, founder of City Friends Club.
“It has become the largest cleanup in our four-year history, showing that community spirit in our city continues to grow. We are especially proud that during the carnival, people chose not only to celebrate and have fun, but also to give back to the city – helping redirect waste from landfill to recycling and supporting a more sustainable urban environment.”
City Friends Club thanked the Limassol municipality for its cooperation and support, as well as all volunteers who dedicated their time and energy, demonstrating the power of collective action.
The organisation also expressed appreciation to its supporting partner, Bernhard Schulte Shipmanagement (BSM), whose contribution made this initiative possible.
