The funeral of acclaimed Cypriot chef Andreas Mavrommatis took place on Sunday in Agios Ioannis Pitsilias, in the presence of family, friends and admirers of his work and legacy. He passed away suddenly last Saturday at the age of 69.
The service was held at the Church of Archangel Michael and was led by Archbishop Georgios of Cyprus. The government was represented by Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos, while former president Nicos Anastasiades also attended.
In his address, Kombos described Mavrommatis as a rare individual whose talent, humility and hard work earned him international recognition, noting that France had embraced his culinary achievements rooted in Cypriot heritage.
Anastasiades paid tribute to a “distinguished chef and remarkable Cypriot”, highlighting his contribution to promoting Cyprus abroad and recalling that he was awarded the Medal of Outstanding Contribution to the Republic in 2018.
Mavrommatis was also honoured by local officials, relatives and friends, with messages read on behalf of religious figures, marking a final farewell to a chef widely regarded as an ambassador of Cypriot culture overseas.
