President Nikos Christodoulides assured on Tuesday that efforts are underway to restart talks on the Cyprus problem, while criticising the disclosure of discussions held at the national council.

Speaking in Lefkara, Christodoulides referred to his recent meeting with UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres, describing it as constructive and aligned in objectives.

It was a very good meeting, he has the clear political will, the plan to move forward and we hope his efforts, his will to transform into a concrete initiative to restart the talks,” he said.

He added that work began immediately after the meeting to advance this objective.

The day after the meeting with the secretary-general, an effort began that I hope will lead us to the goal of resuming the talks,” he said.

Expanding on his criticism of the leaks, Christodoulides said that not all information made public accurately reflected discussions but stressed that elements which should have remained confidential had been disclosed.

I’m not saying that everything that has seen the light of day corresponds to reality, but some of what was said, we would rather have kept preserved”, he remarked.

Reports have suggested that Guterres may present a framework for a solution before the end of his term, a prospect that could shape the next phase of diplomatic engagement.

Christodoulides reiterated that the government’s objective remains aligned with the secretary-general, centring, that being the resumption of formal negotiations.

He did not provide a timeline for the restart of talks but said the process is already underway at a preparatory level, following the recent meeting.

Christodoulides previously affirmed that Guterres has indicated the need for tangible progress before the end of his term, adding that discussions also covered contacts Guterres held during a recent visit to Turkey and his assessment of next steps.

He also pointed to the role of the European Union in supporting the process, saying there is agreement that the bloc can contribute substantively to efforts aimed at achieving progress and, ultimately, a resolution.
