New signs have been placed to demarcate the buffer zone near the Nicosia village of Denia as part of the United Nations peacekeeping force in Cyprus’ endeavours to “reinforce the measures to ensure stability” in and around the buffer zone, Unficyp spokesman Aleem Siddique said on Monday.
Those measures, he said, include “improving signage to ensure public knowledge” of where the buffer zone starts and ends, and thus avoid “accidental civilian access” to the buffer zone.
The signs state that there can be “no entry without authorisation” to the buffer zone, and drew attention on social media after one was placed near a field of Cyprus tulips in Denia – a popular spot for weekend walks.
Cyprus tulips, as the name suggests, are endemic only to Cyprus, and grow in a small number of areas on the island, including Denia and neighbouring Mammari, the Paphos district’s Akamas peninsula, the Maronite village of Kormakitis, and some villages in the Pentadaktylos mountain range.
It typically flowers in March and April every year, and is strictly protected.
