An independent Cypriot film exploring memory, division and return will premiere online on April 23, marking the anniversary of the opening of crossing points in 2003.

Sofoklis, written, directed and scored by Evren Maner, follows an elderly man returning to his village after decades of separation.

The story focuses on confronting the past rather than reclaiming it.

The first episode, titled “The Arrival”, will be released on YouTube, with the project presented as a seven-part series.

The filmmakers chose an online release to make the film accessible to audiences across Cyprus and abroad.

“We wanted this story to reach people directly, not just in cinemas, but in homes –on both sides,” Maner said.

The production has been nearly ten years in the making and will be released gradually, allowing time for reflection between episodes.

The creators said this format aims to encourage discussion and a more engaged viewing experience.

The project began with the release of its original soundtrack, also composed by Maner, which serves as an introduction to the film’s themes.

Sofoklis is a fully independent production involving both Turkish- and Greek-speaking Cypriots.

The team said the decision to make the series freely available is intended to create space for dialogue and shared reflection across communities.

The premiere date carries symbolic weight, coinciding with a key moment in Cyprus’ recent history.
