Restaurant review: The Ship Inn, Limassol

Rest

Writing about restaurants amidst a lockdown does all of us a disservice as the experience is severely distorted through the prism of having to have your food delivered to you at home. While I cannot speak about visiting The Ship Inn this week, as it has been shuttered for a while along with every other restaurant and bar, I can thankfully draw from memory to describe the experience of being one of the patrons.

Although The Ship Inn is one of Limassol’s most established pubs, having been a staple on the scene for a long time, it has evolved over time, a theme common with several pubs which have survived and thrived since the turn of the millennium. Despite many people visiting The Ship Inn to watch live sporting events, it has grown to become a fully-fledged restaurant in more than one way. Its space, ambiance, service, menu and food quality are reflected in that moniker.

In terms of the food, The Ship Inn does the simple things well, something which isn’t done nearly enough despite the straightforward nature of the process. Its menu is fairly expansive, containing Mexican dishes, grilled items, pasta dishes and pizzas, sharing platters, and more. To the best of my recollection, I have not had a single dish which elicited any negative reactions. Their dishes range from good to very good, which is particularly noteworthy considering the range of cuisines.

For our takeaway, we ordered two main dishes and one starter, with the latter being the Bruschetta Mediterraneo. Bruschetta should be quite familiar to lovers of Italian food as it provides an easy, simple starter which is somewhat of a blank canvas: toasted bread, drizzled with olive oil, with various fresh toppings added on top of it. In this instance, and as the name suggests, it had tomato, feta cheese and pesto sauce. Although the generous amount of toppings can weigh a little heavy on the six pieces of bread, particularly in terms of moisture, they were still very good. The combination of tomato and feta cheese over toasted bread is hard to dislike.

The first main dish was penne arrabbiata, a classic pasta dish with tomato sauce and red chilli peppers, which was done quite well. Something to note here is that this isn’t a mildly spicy pasta, it’s quite fiery, so best to avoid if your body doesn’t find spicy foods agreeable. All pasta dishes can be modified on the food delivery applications (Foody, Bolt) used to order; ingredients can be removed or added. In terms of adding ingredients, the restaurant allows you to add things such as avocado (€2), chicken (€3), feta (€1) and more. However, we made a custom request at the comments section for the addition of courgettes, which they were kind enough to satisfy at no extra charge.

The second main dish was their marinated chicken kebab, which includes 260g of marinated chicken breast in souvlaki form, chips, salad, pitta bread and a small tub of tzatziki. Everything here was well-cooked and the chicken was deceptively filling, while the chips were fresh, hand-cut and homemade. A little piece of advice here is to consume the dish soon after delivery as the moisture will inevitably increase inside the container which is something you want to avoid, since this will slowly make the salad wilt and the pitta bread less crispy.
