Simple home exercises to manage BPPV-related vertigo

This video is meant to expand your general knowledge about living a healthy life and is NOT a substitute for seeking medical advice. Please consult with your doctor before making changes in your health practices, diet and self-care.

In this video, physical therapist Dr. Jo teaches you home exercises to manage your dizziness, if you have been diagnosed with Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo, better known as BPPV.

Vertigo itself is a sensation of feeling off balance and is often caused by an inner ear problem. The most common causes for vertigo include:

  • BPPV, which occurs when tiny calcium particles (canaliths) are dislodged from their normal location and collect in the inner ear. It can occur for no known reason and may be associated with age.
  • Meniere’s disease, an inner ear disorder thought to be caused by a fluid build-up, changing pressure in the ear. In addition to vertigo, it can also come with ringing in the ears (tinnitus) and hearing loss.
  • Vestibular neuritis or labyrinthitis, an inner ear problem, usually related to a viral infection. The infection causes inflammation in the inner ear around nerves important for helping the body sense balance.
  • Less often, vertigo may also be associated with head or neck injuries, brain abnormalities, certain medications and migraine headaches – so, don’t wait to see a doctor for a proper diagnosis.
