Cyprus-born multimedia artist Irene Kattou has been chosen to represent Cyprus at this year’s Venice exhibition, which is titled The Body Language.

Her work, titled Venus Vain is a sculpture made with 3D Pen and is a take on the story of the goddess Venus.

Venus Vain is an allegory about the story of beauty, told by the goddess of beauty herself, Venus,” the artist’s interpretation reads. “Venus, coming into existence from the seafoam of Paphos, Cyprus, has since been a historic symbol of alluring female beauty, influencing many works of art, most famously the sculpture Venus de Milo. I wanted to create something that would challenge the sculpture of Venus de Milo and give a contemporary, female perspective on beauty.”

The exhibition, which opened on March 1 this year was organised by international arts platform ITSLIQUID in a gallery in Venice.

This year’s theme explores the complexity of human consciousness, the human body as a communication system “with its own language and infinite ways of expression”. Artists were invited to draw inspiration from Venetian costumes to explore “the connection between desires, needs, fears through rituals that brings humankind to change, to transform and to evolve their inner world”.

The exhibition will run until March 21.
