Vartkes Mahdessian was proclaimed Representative of the Religious Group of the Armenians in the House of Representatives on Friday after running unopposed for the position.

Mahdessian submitted his candidacy for the May 30 parliamentary elections on May 12. With the deadline for nominating candidates and submitting objections expiring, he was named Representative by Costas Constantinou, Chief Returning Officer of the Religious Groups of Maronites, Armenians and Latins.

Constantinou congratulated Mahdessian for his re-election, wished him all the best in his work and assured him that the Ministry of Interior is there to help and to support all religious groups. He also expressed confidence that the close cooperation that the Ministry of Interior had with him in previous years will continue.

For his part, Mahdessian said that with a sense of responsibility in these difficult days Cyprus is going through, he decided to reclaim the position of Representative of the Armenians in the House.

“My vision and aspiration for the coming years is to support our cultural identity, to support our community organizations and to have a good cooperation with the Republic of Cyprus and the Republic of Armenia,” he said.
