Brutal rhythms: Beatrice Rana performs excerpts from Stravinsky’s ‘Firebird’

In this video, 24-year-old concert pianist Beatrice Rana performs an excerpt from ‘The Firebird’, a ballet and orchestral concert work by the Russian-born composer Igor Stravinsky.

Written for Sergei Diaghilev’s Ballets Russes company, and based on Russian folktales, the ballet’s 1910 premiere at the Opéra de Paris was an immediate success, catapulting Stravinsky to international fame.

Here, in an arrangement by Guido Agosti, Rana performs the Suite’s demanding ‘Danse infernale’, ‘Berceuse’ and ‘Finale’, echoing the fantastical elements of the work’s origin story: the battle of a prince to free 13 beautiful princesses from an evil wizard, in whose garden grows a tree that gives golden apples, drawing to it the firebird at the heart of the adventure.
