Jazz and more coming to Technopolis 20 this July

alkman saxοphone quartet

Kickstarting next month’s live music at Paphos venue Technopolis 20, Trio Frisson will perform a blend of groove, soul, reggae and world music on July 2. After their performance in the garden, several other ensembles will follow with more shows throughout the month.

On July 10 a jazz quartet with Ioanna Troullidou, Giorgos Morfitis, Irenaeos Koullouras and Stelios Xydias will take the Technopolis 20 stage. Three years after their last performance at the venue, the garden of Technopolis 20 will fill with melodies of the jazz repertoire of the 30s, 40s and 50s, including some original compositions by Troullidou.

Then on July 16, the Alkman Saxophone Quartet will present a special concert titled Five centuries of music in blue and white: From Leontaridis to Koumentakis and Glass. Inspired by the bicentennial of the beginning of the Greek revolution, the Alkman Saxophone Quartet attempts to encompass five centuries of Greek music through the unique sound structure of the saxophone quartet. Specifically, that of the relatively unknown Greek composer from the Renaissance Francesco Londarit detto il Greco – the first known Greek composer of modern times according to Nicolaos Panagiotakis.

The quartet will also attempt to connect Greek musical traditions with contemporary art music, as well as Greek music elements from the old world with the new world at the other side of the Atlantic. The newly established Alkman Saxοphone Quartet is founded as a partnership between Greek and Cypriot saxophonists – Christos Zenios, Giorgos Daravelis, Theofilos Sotiriades and Yiannis Miralis – though all members are well-known soloists and music educators with rich and diverse artistic careers.
