In this video, taken from Season 2, Episode 1 of CULTURESCOPE, founder and host of the popular web series Paul Lambis talks movie score magic with award-winning Cypriot film composer George Kallis.
Recipient of the Jerry Goldsmith Award and the International Film Music Critics Award, Kallis’ scores have gained him well-deserved recognition as one of the most prominent composers in Hollywood.
“I grew up in a very rich musical environment,” says Kallis of his early years. “My grandfather played the violin, and my mother sings opera, and I was growing up appreciating all kinds of music.”
Some time later, during his studies at Nicosia’s English School, his budding talent for composition was spotted by drama teachers Eric Hellicar and Maro Polydorou, who encouraged him to score original music for the school plays – Education Ministry awards followed.
The 1999 Eurovision song contest, the Berklee College of Music and London’s Royal College of Music came next. And during the course of those years, a film-scoring class and crossing paths with prominent music supervisor Graham Walker propelled him onto his current, highly-successful professional trajectory.
Today, his own rigorous self-criticism aside, Kallis’ happiness in his chosen path is palpable, and continues to bring him new creative opportunities – not least with movie giant Disney.
