Two men were arrested after trying to depart the island using fake Portuguese passports, police said on Tuesday.

According to Paphos police spokesman Michalis Ioannou, a 29-year-old African man went to Paphos airport on Monday morning to board a flight to Marseille, France.

He presented a Portugal passport, which did not have the necessary security details on it, the officer said, so he was taken for questioning where he allegedly admitted to the offence.

The man had applied for asylum on July 6 this year and his application is being assessed.

Police are investigating a case of forgery and circulation of forged documents.

Earlier that day a 32-year-old man was also arrested and remanded for four days in Paphos on suspicion of forgery and circulation of a forged document, police said.

The man was also arrested at the airport, trying to board a flight to the Netherlands using a fake Portuguese passport.

Police said the second suspect had applied for asylum on March 4 this year which is also under review.
