Coronavirus: Five deaths, infections top 3,000 (Updated)

Five deaths and a record 3,002 new infections from coronavirus were announced on Wednesday.

The five deaths were three women aged 74, 77 and 94 and two men aged 81 and 87.

This brings the number of deaths from Covid-19 to 635: 404 men and 231 women with an average age of 76 years.

There are 174 patients with Covid-19 in hospital, 84 of whom in serious condition, including 24 who are intubated. According to the health ministry 82.7 per cent of patients with coronavirus in hospital are not vaccinated.

The new cases were among 118,894 PCR and rapid tests with a positivity rate of 2.52 per cent.

More than a third of cases – 1,379 – concern people who got rapid tests in private labs and pharmacies.

Another 106 cases were detected during testing among passengers at the Larnaca and Paphos airports.

Thirty-five cases were among samples collected by public hospitals’ labs, 301 were contacts of confirmed cases, and 507 were among samples collected through private initiative.

The remaining 674 cases were detected during the rapid testing offered in all districts on behalf of the health ministry. Of these, seven were detected in nursing homes in the Nicosia district and one in Limassol. In addition, 351 cases were detected in Nicosia out of the 14,629 tests, 129 in Limassol (5,693), 90 in Larnaca (5,266), 49 in Paphos (2,685), and 47 in the Famagusta district (2,685).

So far 157,928 cases have been recorded.
