Police had to rescue drivers on Sunday after they tried to cross the Xeros river in the Paphos district, which had developed a strong flow after recent heavy rainfall.

In one incident a police helicopter ha to rescue two people who were trapped in their vehicle in the water trying to cross the river.

Earlier the police had urged drivers not to try and cross because of the depth of the water.

Those who tried and failed to cross were putting themselves in danger, the police said.

The agricultural roads that lead to the river have also been closed.
