A 33-year-old man is expected to be deported from the island after he was arrested in Paphos without the necessary documents, police said on Monday.

Officers found the man walking in a specific area in the district on Sunday and stopped him for a check during which, police said, he failed to provide any identification documents.

A further check through the aliens and immigration service showed he was a third country national who had applied for asylum but his application was rejected on February 19, 2021.

Since then, police said, the man had been residing in the republic illegally.

Officers asked him whether he had filed any appeal against the rejection of his application, but the man did not present them with any relevant documents.

He was detained while procedures are being carried out for his deportation, police added.
