Police campaign against drink driving

Police have warned that they will carry out increased 24-hour alcohol and narco tests, particularly on Friday and Saturday night, to try and net drivers under the influence (DUI).

The beefed-up checks will take place between May 4 and 10 “day and night, across the entire road network” as authorities seek to tackle DUI incidents, which they attributed to being the main factor in one fourth of all fatal road crashes.

Just last week, it was reported that a seven-year-old boy injured in a traffic accident died from his injuries.

In November, the Cyprus Mail reported that in the past 12 years there have been 729 road deaths and that alcohol was determined to be the cause of the crashes in 26 per cent of cases.

Cyprus police are carrying out the campaign as part of a coordinated European drive under the Roadpol framework.
