Limassol Mayor Nicos Nicolaides on Friday inspected works underway in the town, noting that the emphasis was no longer on the coastal front or the centre, but on balanced development across the city.

Nicolaides visited the maintenance work at Olympion beach, the upgrade of the Fitidio sports centre GSO and a revamp of the centre of Ayia Fyla.

He spoke of a new development that concerned that whole town, as part of a balanced and complete development and an improvement in residents’ lives.

“Of course, it is a process that needs time, it cannot be achieved from one year to the other, but at least we are moving in the right direction,” he said. The revamp of the historic centre of Ayia Fyla was the flagship of work in the neighbourhoods, he added.

Work is underway at Ayios Spyridonas and Omonia and hopefully would soon start in Ayios Nicolaos, he said. The Ayia Fyla project was one that residents had long campaigned for, he noted.

“The project started months ago and is proceeding to schedule, with efforts underway to speed it up further,” he said. He thanked residents for their patience and cooperation, noting that the completed project would be a jewel not just for Ayia Fyla but all of Limassol.

Nicolaides also visited the GSO sports centre where phase one of the upgrade has started covering outdoor sport facilities – that it the three courts – tennis, basketball, and mini football.

They also include repairs and improvements of the outdoor grounds of the south entrance where events and mass participation sports will be carried out.

The mayor inspected work at Olympion beach, being carried out ahead of the summer and concern maintenance to infrastructure such as changing rooms, bathrooms, benches, pavements, and small squares. Maintenance work is also being carried out on the lifeguard towers.
