Police on Monday arrested a 36-year-old man suspected of causing a deadly traffic collision in Paphos over the weekend.

Around 10.55pm Sunday, a 59-year-old from Georgia was hit by a car while attempting to cross the road in Mesoyi.

The driver was being sought for abandoning the scene after the victim was taken by ambulance to Paphos hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A second accident took place around 12.30 am Monday on the road between Ayia Napa and Ayia Thekla.

Under circumstances still under review, the scooter driven by the victim, a 68-year-old tourist from Israel, crashed into a car driven by a 26-year-old.

The older man reportedly flew off the scooter and fell to the ground.

He was taken by ambulance to Famagusta general hospital’s A&E, where he was pronounced dead by the doctor on call.

An initial drug test on the 26-year-old came back positive for amphetamines.

Famagusta traffic police will continue investigating the crash.
