Events at Leventis Gallery bring legends to life

mythology & art

As the season changes a new programme of activities begins at AG Leventis Gallery to bring young and old closer to art.

On September 21, a new round of tours titled Mythology & Art will kick off led by assistant curator Despina Christofidou. They will focus on mythological aspects and background history of the artwork, bringing legends to life. “With the rediscovery of antiquity during the Renaissance,” says the gallery, “in particular of Greco-Roman art and Greek and Latin literature, mythological and allegorical subjects came back into the limelight. The stories of gods, heroes and allegories came to life once again on canvas.”

The first Mythology & Art tour will take place twice on September 21, first at 10.30am and then again at 6.30pm. The tour will be repeated on September 28 at the same times, in addition to one on September 24 at 11.30am. All are free and in Greek.

Another series will resume this month inviting young visitors to get to know the artists of the gallery and their paintings. The Meet the Artist series with museum educator Theodora Demetriou is an interactive creative programme for children to get to know some of the most important artists and their paintings through the permanent collections and temporary exhibitions. During the programme children will explore and learn and go home with their own works of art.

The first Meet the Artist takes place on September 24 and will focus on French artist Raoul Dufy. October 15’s event will take a look at Dimitrios Galanis’ work while November 26’s and December 3’s event will be about George Pol. Each event will welcome children in two groups: 5 to 7-year-olds will join the morning workshop from 10.30am to 12.30pm and 8 to 11-year-olds will join the 3pm to 4.30pm event.

Towards the end of the month, a rooftop cocktail party will return. On the occasion of the recent online series The Tipsy Curator and following the summer party organised in July on the 15th-floor Roof Garden of the Leventis Tower, the AG Leventis Gallery team invites the public to say goodbye to Nicosia’s summer evenings. The Tipsy Curator – Goodbye Summer Cocktail Party on September 30 will offer delicious cocktails, the music of DJTwstd and the panoramic view of the city.

“Proving that the role of the museums is much bigger than preserving and exhibiting the cultural heritage and arts,” says the Gallery, “we contribute through a different approach to invite the audience. We challenge you to learn and enjoy the place in the heart of Nicosia where the grandeur of European art from the Renaissance to the 20th century is exhibited, through the pieces collected by AG Leventis Gallery’s founder Anastasios G. Leventis, during his lifetime.”
