One person in custody for smuggling illegal immigrants

Famagusta District Court on Saturday issued a six-day detention order against a 19-year-old man to facilitate police investigations into an ongoing case of trafficking of illegal immigrants.

A statement from police headquarters said that “in the early morning of Saturday, October 1, a boat with 14 irregular migrants on board arrived in Famagusta province. During police investigations, evidence against the 19-year-old was found, who was arrested”.

The young man was brought before the Famagusta District Court which issued a six-day detention order against him.

The other passengers on the boat were taken to the Pournara Migrant Accommodation Centre.

Famagusta CID is continuing its investigations.
