Live music events return to New Division

Local favourite bar, New Division has been serving drinks and good vibes for years. The pandemic enforced numerous changes, from a booking system, totally unlike its style, to a renovation of its courtyard. Some things remain the same though and those are its casual atmosphere, tasty Cypriot cocktails and friendly staff. Now, after two years of pausing events, New Division’s live music nights return.

In between DJs taking over the decks on the weekends now that autumn slowly approaches and the bar’s indoor area expects to welcome more people, three live performances are scheduled to take place this October.

Marking this comeback is a gig by the local band The Ladderman on October 20. The four-piece band is a heavy rock group from Larnaca which formed in 2011. With references to the progressive hard rock era, The Ladderman boasts a heady, thunderous roar that resonates through their guitar-rooted music. Building their reputation through notoriously flawless live shows in Cyprus, they released their acclaimed debut Not a Six in 2016 and since then have been performing all around the island.

Then on October 23, British blues musician and songwriter Bex Marshall will take the New Division stage for an evening of blues rock, ragtime and guitar playing. Bex is a UK British Blues Award winner and a four-time European Blues Awards nominee that has performed in Cyprus numerous times.

Next to perform is another local band that brings high-energy jazz rock. Fuzz Bus is a quartet that has been active for a few years. They put on a fiercely energetic show incorporating improvisation on open forms with solid grooves. They do impromptu re-arrangements of known and unknown soul, funk and pop-rock songs, while throwing in their own material, with improvisation remaining the key element. Their work is influenced by various music genres, jazz and beyond and after a long time away, they make their way back to New Division for a gig on October 27.

Lots more is planned for this autumn including music by some well-known local DJs such as Bombasoul, Marcos and Jonny Blue but also an arts & crafts bazaar that is coming up in early November. The art market will take place at New Division’s sister venue, Evergreen Vegan & Vegetarian on November 5 and will feature several Cyprus-based artists who will display their creations.
