Police on Sunday arrested two people in Paphos, aged 25 and 23, for possession of illegal drugs, driving under the influence of narcotics and illegal stay in the country.

According to a police statement, shortly after midnight on Sunday members of the crime prevention unit conducting traffic checks on Tombs of the Kings Avenue stopped a vehicle driven by a 25-year-old, accompanied by a 30-year-old and a 23-year-old passenger.

Police found the 23-year-old passenger in possession of a quantity of cannabis. When interrogated, he said they were for his personal use, and he was handed over to the drugs squad.

Further checks revealed the 23-year-old was residing illegally in the Republic, as his application for political asylum had been rejected, and he was taken into custody.

The driver of the vehicle also tested positive for drugs in a preliminary check and was released pending confirmation from the state laboratory.

Paphos police are continuing investigations.
