Cyprus Symphony Orchestra events coming soon

cyprophonia2

The classical music scene is kept alive on the island largely thanks to the consistent efforts of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra. Having started the year with preparations for two exciting concerts on January 12, 13 and 26-28, the orchestra has more melodious evenings planned next month as well.

As soon as February arrives, the Orchestra again welcomes conductor and composer Alkis Baltas to take part in its next concert – Orchestra4All 2. On February 9 in Nicosia and February 10 in Limassol, Baltas will be joined by two soloists and the orchestra to bring novels to life through music.

Baltas will create a musical backdrop with excerpts from classical works for the novels Taxi Life and The Saxophone Player by Kostas Lympouris from his novel collection Others of Ours (Cyprus State Award for best Novel in 2015).

In his collection, Lymbouris describes the lives of people from other countries residing in Cyprus in an extremely exciting way. The novels speak about the life of two foreign musicians, a double bass player and a saxophone player. In this concert, the novels will be recited by the well-known actor Irodotos Miltiadous, accompanied by the CySO under the direction of Baltas, featuring as soloists the distinguished Nicos Ioannou – double bass and Yiannis Myralis – saxophone.

A few days later, on February 17 and 18, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra will present another edition of the Cyprophonia 2 concert series. Under the baton of Günter Neuhold, the orchestra will perform the world premiere of two works by contemporary Cypriot composers, as well as one of the greatest early works of Arnold Schönberg.

Andreas Orphanides’ Concerto Cyprus Zephyr, musically depicts the events that the so-called Zephyrus wind brings to Cyprus. Violinist and CySO member Marios Ioannou is the featured soloist in Constantin Papaeorgio’s Concerto for violin and strings, influenced by minimalism and neoclassicism. This concert series will begin its journey from Pallas Theatre in Nicosia before concluding at Paphos’ Markideio Municipal Theatre on February 18, wrapping up the month’s concerts.
