Police in Famagusta on Monday arrested a 36-year-old man for driving 89 km over the speed limit.

According to official statement, traffic police intercepted the driver on the Rizoelia – Ayia Napa highway, for doing 189 km/h instead of the permitted 100 km/h.

The car had darkened windows and the police officer suspected that the man was driving under the influence of drugs, however he refused to provide a saliva sample for a preliminary drug test and assaulted the police officer physically and verbally.

The 36-year-old was arrested for the various violations committed at the scene and taken to the Ayia Napa police station while, in a subsequent vehicle search, police found a pouch containing a plastic bottle with pills of various colours which were sent for lab testing.

The 36-year-old was charged in writing and released to appear in court at a later date.
