Man caught smuggling tobacco, cheese

Police were on Monday investigating a 57-year-old man found to be in possession of duty-free cigarettes and a quantity of cheese products of unknown origin

According to Paphos police spokesman Michalis Nicolaou, on Saturday following a tip off, police stopped the car driven by the 57-year-old.

A search of the vehicle revealed 315kg of cheese products and a package of cigarettes not bearing the customary markings, which was found to be duty-free.

Suspicions were raised that all items were smuggled.

Police notified the customs department which undertook investigation of the case.

According to Nicolaou, the 57-year-old was issued an out-of-court fine of €150 for the tobacco products, while the origin of the cheese products is still being determined.
