Rauf Alp Denktash, grandson of former Turkish Cypriot leader Rauf Raif Denktash, was named Turkey’s Ambassador to Poland on Friday.
The announcement came following reelected President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s appointment of new Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
Denktash’s grandfather was leader of the Turkish Cypriots from 1973 to 2005, having played a role in the island’s politics and conflict from the 1950s onwards. He is the son of Rauf Raif Denktash’s eldest son Raif Denktash, who was killed in a road traffic accident in 1985.
He began working in Turkey’s diplomatic service in 2001 and has worked in various roles including regarding the Israel-Palestine conflict and Turkey’s representation at the UN in New York.
As well as Denktash, Turkey also announced the appointment of new ambassadors to a number of other countries including France, Russia, and Ukraine.
