A 19-year-old man was killed in a car crash in the Larnaca village of Pervolia on Thursday night at 11.55pm.

Named as Michalis Theodorou, he was driving through the village with two 18-year-old female companions.

According to police, the car, which was speeding, first mounted the pavement before hitting some bushes and then the wall of an adjacent building approximately 20 metres away before overturning.

One of the passengers who was sitting in the car’s back seat was thrown from the car during the collisions. She is now hospitalised at the Larnaca general hospital in critical condition. The other passenger’s condition was described as stable.

The fire brigade was required to extricate the driver, who succumbed to his injuries a short while after his arrival at Larnaca general hospital.

According to the head of the Larnaca traffic police Spyros Chrysostomou, the 19-year-old’s death was attributed to multiple vascular injuries, a rupture of the aorta, and vital organ damage.

“Examinations conducted by the police indicate that the deceased and one of the passengers in the back seat were not wearing seat belts,” Chrysostomou added.

Police are still investigating the circumstances regarding the incident.
