The Larnaca criminal court sentenced a man to 15 years in prison on Monday, for having attempted to import a total of 36 kilogrammes of cannabis into Cyprus.

The man, a 47-year-old citizen of the United States, had travelled from his home country to Cyprus via a stopover in Germany on June 29 last year.

His luggage was reportedly flown on the same route, but on different flights.

Following international cooperation between the Cypriot customs department and authorities in another European country, police intercepted the luggage. Upon inspection, police found a total of 36kgs of cannabis in the suitcases.

They then determined that the luggage belonged to the man and arrested him when he attempted to take receipt of the luggage of July 1.
