Fishermen are urged to be careful not to catch Thunnus thynnus – bluefin tuna – due to restrictions for professional and amateur fishing, as it can be easily mistaken for other types of tuna.

The Department of Fisheries and Marine Research says that if bluefin tuna is accidentally caught, it must be returned immediately in a way that maximises its chances of survival.

It reminds fishermen that an international bluefin management plan is in place and that catching bluefin requires a special permit for professionals and is forbidden for amateurs.

“We urge the fishermen to make sure the types they fish are in line with the terms of fishing permits,” the department says.
