Weigh stations on motorways are set to undergo both internal and external renovations, with additional services and electric vehicle charging stations to be introduced, according to Transport Minister Alexis Vafeades.

Speaking to StockWatch on Wednesday, Vafeades said that weigh stations will first undergo a general facelift before being equipped with various facilities to better serve passing drivers.

Specifically, he said that “the buildings will be improved internally and externally to give their facades a more iconic appearance”.

“Additional facilities will include restrooms, a rest area for drivers with a small kiosk and electric vehicle charging stations,” Vafeades said.

The initial phase will involve the renovation of six weigh stations on the Nicosia-Limassol, Nicosia-Larnaca, and Limassol-Paphos motorways, with the possibility of expanding the project to other locations if necessary.

Vafeades added that the project is co-funded by the EU and is expected to be completed by 2026.

The president of the Scientific and Technical Chamber (Etek) Konstantinos Konstantis said that the matter was thoroughly discussed during a meeting attended by the minister and several public works officials.

Konstantis added that the final plans will be sent to Etek in the coming days, before officially announcing the tender.

“Once we receive the final dossier with all the details, we will immediately announce the tender for the renovation of the weigh stations and the construction of the supporting facilities for use by motorists,” he said.

He also said that further information on the size of the stations, as well as the extra space needed and the location for the electric vehicle charging station is expected to be provided.
