Yet another food delivery driver was attacked on Wednesday evening in Limassol.

The 23-year-old foreigner, who is studying in Cyprus and working part time as a food delivery driver, reported that at 9.20pm, while he was delivering food in Kapsalos area in Limassol, he was attacked by seven young people.

The driver said the attackers hit him, forced him to flee on foot and stole his moped valued at €1,500.

The attackers were thought to be between 18 and 20 years old.

On Wednesday, Justice Minister Marios Hartsiotis said the government was determined to clamp down on racist attacks against delivery drivers, which are primarily unfolding in Limassol.

In statements after a meeting with Labour Minister Yiannis Panayiotou and police chief Themistos Arnaoutis, he said there have been 18 attacks on delivery drivers this year. After Wednesday’s attack this has now risen to 19.

Sixteen attacks have been reported in Limassol and three in Nicosia.

In a press release, Wolt condemned the attacks against food delivery drivers, many of which it said had “racist” motives, and expressed satisfaction over the state’s actions and measures to address the issue once and for all.

Wolt said it had written to the justice ministry in June 2023, pointing out the need to take measures, and also expressed the company’s views during a recent meeting in Limassol under the district police head.

It added that it deplores all actions of violence and racism and stood by the drivers to provide support and assistance.
