Greek Cypriot teachers’ trade union Poed and Turkish Cypriot teachers’ trade union Ktos on Saturday night faced off against each other in a football friendly match in Limassol.
Ktos secretary-general Burak Mavis said the match “is an important step towards strengthening intercommunal ties in Cyprus and reinforcing our belief in peace”.
“This bridge established through the universal language of sport reflects our desire to build a common future and reunite in the fields of culture, education, and the economy,” he said.
He added that both unions now aim to “take this solidarity a step further” and field a combined football team comprising both Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot teachers in the future.
Poed ran out 3-0 winners, and Mavis told the Cyprus Mail that alongside the Greek Cypriot union, “both sport and the bicommunal event were winners“.
