Thinker Maker Space of CYENS will host Eating our Heritage this Friday afternoon, a workshop that focuses on decolonial acts that integrate displaced heritage objects back to their land and community of origin by resident artist Dimiitrii.

The workshop is inspired by Dimiitriii’s residency project, which explores radical methods for decolonising heritage preservation, reimagining museum displays and developing hybrid ways to reconnect people with their cultural heritage.

Participants will be divided into teams of five to begin the session by researching heritage objects from their cultural backgrounds. Using online museum collections, they will locate items that have been displaced from their countries. Following this, they will digitally capture these objects and trace their outlines onto parchment paper as a tactile and creative initial step toward reclaiming them.

In the second part of the workshop, participants will recreate the collected objects through a hands-on communal culinary experience. Traditional Greek honey cookie dough, melomakarona, will serve as the material for these recreations. Shaping the dough by hand, they will bring each object to life, crafting a tactile and edible reinterpretation of the original. Afterward, all creations will be baked, coated in syrup, and shared among the group at a communal table.

This act of eating heritage serves as a radical gesture of reclaiming cultural symbols and integrating them into contemporary rituals and practices. Through this collective and creative process, participants reject the notion of heritage as a static subject solely for observation. Instead, they transform cultural objects into ephemeral creations that carry meaning, connection, and delicious flavour.
