Five bills for the prevention and extinguishing of fires across Cyprus will be submitted to the House plenary in January 2025, House interior committee chairman Aristos Damianou said on Thursday.
Damianou said the committee completed its discussions on each article on Thursday and expressed satisfaction that many proposals included in a report prepared by the MPs had been included.
The report had been prepared by the interior committee and discussed at a House plenary in 2022, after devastating fires in Larnaca and Limassol.
Damianou said the five bills contain special regulations covering municipalities, communities and urban, rural and forest areas, as well as amendments to the criminal code.
Elaborating on some of the provisions, Damianou referred to the areas where a fire can be lit, measures to prevent fires and stricter penalties for violations.
“A more complete framework is being created,” he added.
Damianou said more can be done, however these bills were a step in the right direction for fire prevention.
