The autopsy on seven-year-old girl who died while being treated at Makario hospital was carried out on Tuesday, while police are investigating the conditions of her death.

Police press officer Kyriaki Lambrianidou said the girl, named as Georgia Petrou, was admitted to Paphos general hospital on December 8 with health problems. Due to the severity of her condition, she was taken to Makario hospital.

Petrou died the next day.

Police has already begun taking statements, while both Paphos and Nicosia criminal investigation departments are working together on the case.

The health ministry said it was waiting on lab results to reveal the girl’s cause of death. It has also asked the state health services (Okypy) to prepare a fact-finding report on the incident.

An announcement by the Petrou’s family specified the funeral will take place on Thursday at 1:30pm at Tala’s Christou Sotiros church.

It called on anyone attending to wear white, and make donations to the association ‘one dream, one wish’ and the Tala primary school where Petrou attended.

In a post decrying the tragedy, Paphos mayor Phedonas Phedonas said it had occurred because Paphos hospital had been “unable to handle the case and had no bed available” to treat the child.

“Some don’t even respect the lives of young children. Those who [allow] the hospital to remain in a state of inadequacy bear a massive responsibility,” the mayor said.
