Polis Chrysochous mayor has requested the construction of a new modern hospital and not just a partial upgrade in a letter to President Nikos Christodoulides.
“The municipality disagrees with the partial upgrade of the hospital, as this implies sidelining the request for a new modern hospital,” said Polis mayor Yiotis Papachristofi.
He added that the president said in his visit to Polis on December 7, that among the projects announced, the complete upgrade of the Polis Chrysohous hospital in 2026 is included as well.
He highlighted the complete upgrade and operation of the radiology department and the creation of a short-term hospitalisation department, at a cost of €400,000.
The mayor has previously said that the existing hospital in Polis Chrysochous has “significant problems”, most of them down to its age. He pointed out that parts of the building were built during British colonial rule and that they therefore “no longer meet the area’s modern needs”.
The area of Polis Chrysohous is remote, and the town should also experience the full support of the state, he said.
“For that reason we are asking the request to be reconsidered and support the right of the residents of the district to be provided with proper medical care and treatment in a modern hospital.”
He concluded by saying that if the new hospital is accepted, the municipality is willing to contribute to finding a plot for it and help designing it.
