One of the most watched shows this season, Netflix’s masterpiece Arcane is based on the world of League of Legends, diving into the conflict between the utopic city of Piltover and the oppressed underground of Zaun. They reflect two completely opposite worlds; the world of the wealthy elite and the underworld where people battle to survive.

The story follows the lives of sisters Vi and Powder (later Jinx) who grew up in Zaun. The development in both of these worlds leads to the discovery of ‘hextech’, which enables everyone to use magic. While in Zaun they start using a drug that turns people into monstrous creatures with super strength, an advantage in defending themselves against Piltover.

The series also does a really good job showing the background of each character, important to understand their behaviour and development throughout the years.

The animated series focuses on more serious matters too: including the sacrifices made to save loved ones and the under-the-table deals between people of the two cities to make their lives easier. It also shows the aftermath the conflict has on people, tearing apart families, impacting their mental health and the political problems between the two worlds.

The art style is unique and beautiful to watch, 3D models have the feel of 2D paintings, creating the idea that the viewer is inside the League of Legends game.

The music choices for both seasons are a perfect match with well-known names including Imagine Dragons on the soundtrack.

The first season of the series aired in 2021 and the second one in 2024, and both had me gripped.
