Cctv cameras will be installed at 25 more schools across the country in January, an official with the education ministry confirmed on Tuesday.

Speaking to daily Phileleftheros, Elias Markatzis said this is part of a larger drive to install cameras at 50 schools overall.

However, in January alone, cameras will go up in 25 of the 50 earmarked schools.

The necessary funds have been allocated.

The education ministry prepared the list of schools according to a risk assessment relating to acts of vandalism and the frequency of such incidents.

Asked about the cost, Markatzis said it depended on the particulars of each school – in certain cases the installation might cost up to €10,000.

Installation will cover primary as well as secondary schools, in all districts.

Although the plan envisages coverage for 50 schools, more premises could be added to the list depending on circumstances.

Initially cameras had been installed in ten schools, as part of a pilot programme – a drive to deal with “violence and delinquency”.

Back in April, the personal data protection commissioner had green-lit the intended surveillance, but on certain conditions: that cameras be placed at and around the main entrances and exits of schools; that only areas within school bounds be recorded; and that the cameras be operational only when schools are closed.

In addition, video footage should not be stored for more than 72 hours, that access to recorded material should be “strictly limited”, and that warning signs should be posted so that those who may be recorded are aware.
