House president Annita Demetriou expressed her commitment to deepening collaboration with Spain during a meeting on Monday with the Spanish congress president, Francina Armengol Socias. The Spanish delegation, which includes vice president of the senate Javier Maroto Aranzabal, is in Cyprus for a three-day official visit.
Demetriou welcomed the Spanish officials, stating that their visit reaffirms a shared determination to strengthen parliamentary ties at both bilateral and European levels. She highlighted the critical role of parliamentary diplomacy in promoting common goals amid challenging political times.
Discussions between the two sides covered enhanced bilateral cooperation and pressing issues such as the Cyprus problem and migration. Demetriou briefed Armengol on the ongoing challenges Cyprus faces, especially as a frontline EU member state dealing with migration. She praised Spain for its consistent support for a solution to the Cyprus problem based on UN resolutions.
“We share common concerns as Mediterranean countries and first points of entry for refugees. Our collaboration is essential in addressing these humanitarian challenges,” Demetriou said.
She also thanked Armengol for endorsing her initiative in Palma to send a joint appeal to the European parliament regarding migration, noting that further discussions are planned in the Canary Islands.
Armengol, speaking through an interpreter, emphasised the shared values between Spain and Cyprus. She underscored the importance of cooperation in addressing regional issues, including climate change and economic reform. Armengol also reiterated Spain’s support for a bicommunal solution to the Cyprus problem through dialogue and diplomacy.
The Spanish delegation is scheduled to visit the Pournara reception centre, where they will witness firsthand Cyprus’ efforts to manage migration. Armengol acknowledged the complexity of the migration issue and called for greater European solidarity, emphasising respect for human rights.
Both sides agreed to continue working closely to enhance parliamentary cooperation and address the challenges facing their countries and the region. Demetriou expressed confidence in future joint initiatives, stating that Cyprus and Spain will remain committed partners in defending democracy and strengthening European values.
Tomorrow’s meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides at 10am at the presidential palace will focus on finalising agreements and exploring new areas for collaboration.
