The situation at state hospitals remains manageable as efforts continue to address the ongoing flu outbreak, state health services organisation (Okypy) spokesman Charilaos Charilaou said on Tuesday.
Charilaou noted a temporary reprieve at emergency departments but warned that this could change as a significant influx of patients is expected in the coming days, which could strain hospital bed capacity.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency, he assured that Okypy is working diligently to manage the surge in cases caused by seasonal illnesses, ensuring all patients receive the care they require.
Charilaou explained that the simultaneous circulation of influenza A and B, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), Covid-19 and metapneumovirus has increased the number of people seeking help at emergency departments and raised demand for hospital beds.
Despite the challenges, Charilaou stressed that the situation remains under control and there is no immediate cause for concern.
He urged individuals with mild symptoms to avoid visiting emergency departments, as they would not be prioritised and would likely face significant delays. Instead, they should contact their general practitioners for further guidance.
Charilaou added that if the situation worsens, additional measures will be implemented to address the increased demand.
Providing statistics, he said about 200 people visited the emergency department at Nicosia general hospital on a daily basis, while the numbers in Larnaca, Limassol, and Famagusta hover around 170. Additionally, five patients with influenza A are currently being treated in intensive care units.
He concluded by urging the public to adopt preventive measures, such as regular handwashing with soap and water or alcohol-based solutions and to limit contact with others if they are symptomatic, especially avoiding vulnerable groups.
