The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) has submitted a budget request of €3,803,774 for 2025. Addressing the House interior committee, the chairman of CNA’s board of directors, Andreas Frangos, outlined plans to invest in digital transformation, new technologies, and the digitisation of the agency’s archive.
As a semi-governmental organisation, CNA’s budget requires approval from the House plenum, which is expected in the coming weeks. The agency currently employs 55 staff members, including foreign correspondents, and provides news services in Greek, English, Turkish, and Arabic.
With the upcoming Cyprus EU presidency, Frangos announced plans to strengthen CNA’s English and Turkish news services in the near future.
Recently, CNA introduced a new “parliament” section on its website, offering users detailed updates on developments at the House of representatives. Beyond its digitalisation initiatives, Frangos also highlighted plans for broader modernisation, including the long-pending construction of a dedicated CNA building, a project that has been delayed since 2013.
“The approval of the budget, as submitted, will enable CNA to maintain its legal obligations, its independence and ability to provide reliable, valid and timely news and address any upcoming challenges,” Frangos noted.
CNA director Dinos Finikaridis added that the agency had a particularly important role in today’s “era of disinformation”, emphasising its commitment to reliability, fact-checking and thorough vetting of statements.
