Cyprus’ police seized over 600 kilograms of cannabis in 2024, according to an announcement on Wednesday night.

In a post on X, the social media platform better known as Twitter, the police said they seized exactly 616.9kg of cannabis last year, while also listing the quantities of other drugs they seized throughout 2024.

In total, they said, they seized 54.1kg of cocaine and 696 ecstasy tablets, as well as amounts of other, less well-known drugs.

For example, they seized exactly 34kg of cathine, a mild stimulant found in the leaves of the khat plant, which is a controlled substance in most of Europe, but is considered socially acceptable in much of eastern Africa. There, people often chew khat leaves.

They also seized 29.3kg of hexahydrocannabinol (HHC), a semi-synthetic cannabinoid derived from tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) , which is typically produced through the hydrogenation of THC. HHC is considered to be milder than THC and have a longer shelf life.
