The issue of a commissioner for the elderly took centre stage in a meeting on Tuesday at the presidential palace between President Nikos Christodoulides and the Cyprus organisation of older citizens.
President of the organisation, Antonis Demetriades said the issue of a designated commissioner had been a long-standing point of discussion.
“The president showed understanding and shared his views on the matter. He committed to reviewing the situation and we will continue to discuss it,” Demetriades said.
He said a dedicated body to coordinate efforts and services concerned with the elderly was an established role in other European countries, where there are even ministers specifically dedicated to older people. Demetriades stressed that Cyprus is behind in this area.
“We believe that such a role could help better coordinate the efforts of various organisations and associations working on behalf of older citizens,” Demetriades added.
The organisation said a commissioner must be granted sufficient powers to ensure meaningful decision making and support for the elderly.
The meeting also touched on insurance matters and housing for the elderly.
Demetriades indicated that although medications were not specifically discussed, further meetings with relevant ministers are planned to address this matter in more detail.
Discussions also centred on the ongoing preparation of a strategic plan for older citizens, which Demetriades said was nearing completion although further refinements may still be necessary.
“We have been advocating for this strategic plan for many years. It was first announced by the deputy minister over a year ago, and it is now in its final stages,” he said.
The role of a commissioner for the elderly is included in the plan.
