The Larnaca Federation of Parents’ Associations for Secondary Education is demanding immediate updates on the progress of air conditioner installations and the functioning of heating systems in the district’s schools. In a letter to the education minister and the Larnaca school board, the federation warned that if their concerns are not addressed, they will take further action.
Citing a recent announcement from the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) about delays in air conditioner installations, the federation described the situation as unacceptable. “It is unthinkable that students, especially seniors preparing for the pancyprian exams, may be forced to sit their exams in extreme heat, with temperatures exceeding 40 degrees Celsius,” the letter stated.
The parents are demanding a commitment from the ministry and school authorities to ensure that all senior students will take their exams in air-conditioned classrooms. They also request a full update on the installation process, including which schools have fully operational air conditioning and whether the first phase of the project has been completed as promised.
Beyond cooling concerns, the federation also criticised the inadequate heating during the winter months. “It is unacceptable that students are expected to learn in freezing classrooms, putting their health and education at risk,” the letter continued. They are calling for clear information on the maintenance of heating systems and insist that by the start of the next school year, all such issues must be permanently resolved.
“The education minister has an obligation to provide dignified conditions for all students,” the federation stressed. “We expect immediate responses with concrete details and commitments, as our patience has run out after repeated delays and vague assurances.”
If their concerns are not met with action, the federation has warned it will pursue all legal avenues to ensure the well-being of students.
