Works to upgrade and extend the emergency department at the Nicosia general hospital will begin on Monday, the state health services organisation (Okypy) said.
In a statement on Friday, Okypy said the project will enhance infrastructure and equipment, with completion expected by the end of 2025.
During construction, a single main entrance will serve both patients and ambulances, with a waiting lounge accommodating up to 15 people. Okypy clarified that the number of examination beds will remain unchanged.
The project includes an expansion and redesign of the emergency department, incorporating a short treatment ward, renovations to flooring, ceilings, lighting, and doors, as well as insulation of external walls. Additionally, patient entry points will be upgraded, and the waiting area will be improved with more seating and additional hygiene facilities.
Renovations will also cover the reception and archives, while specialised examination rooms and an upgraded resuscitation area for multiple trauma patients will be introduced.
Patient bathing areas will be redesigned, and a dedicated space for briefing relatives will be created.
Staff work and rest areas will be improved, alongside the addition of new storage areas for medicines and medical supplies.
“Upgrading the emergency department of the Nicosia general hospital constitutes another crucial step in improving the health services provided, contributing to the effective and faster handling of emergencies,” Okypy said.
It added that the project “is part of the overall strategy of Okypy to upgrade public hospitals, demonstrating its commitment to providing optimal health services.”
Okypy assured that “every possible effort is being made to minimise any inconvenience and ensure the smooth operation of the department.”
It said it counts on the understanding and cooperation of the public so that the project is completed “the soonest possible and in the safest way, to everyone’s benefit.”
