Tomatoes sold as Cypriot at a reseller point of sale were found to be imported from Egypt, inspectors from the agriculture ministry found on Wednesday.

“It was determined that the products came to Cyprus legally and passed the required phytosanitary checks of the services,” the ministry said.

The checks were carried out after a complaint to the ministry hinting that the vegetables were falsely labelled as Cypriot and sold in boxes used by the Cypriot market.

The agriculture ministry has launched investigations on suspected unfair trade practices and quality standards, announcing that if violations were found sanctions would be imposed.
